Silver-infused sheets are fabrics with silver mixed into or onto the fibre. Silver ions disrupt bacterial cell walls and proteins, limiting the odour-causing bacteria that make bedding smell stale within days.
"Silver-infused," "silver-treated" and "natural silver" all describe the same broad idea. This introduce silver into fabric so it acts on bacteria living there.
Silver can be applied as a surface coating after weaving. It can be synthesised in place on the fibre. Or silver-bearing thread can be woven into the fabric from the start. All three get called "infused."
Silver doesn't work like an antibiotic, which targets one biological pathway. It attacks on several things parallelly which is why bacteria struggle to develop resistance to it.
Silver ions adsorb onto the bacterial cell wall and tear it, interfering the barrier keeping the cell intact.
Ions cross the plasma membrane and bind to it, causing plasmolysis. The cell contents pull away from the wall.
Silver ions bind to sulfhydryl groups in bacterial proteins. Those groups are essential to protein folding and enzyme function. Silver locks onto them, the proteins stop working, the cell dies.
Miracle Made's Clean & Cool™ fabric is 100% cotton with silver treatment. This direct infusion fight off bacteria up to 99.7% on this fabric's surface.
